THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS WIND ENSEMBLE
JERRY JUNKIN, conductor
The UTWE has firmly established itslf as one of America's truly elite
wind bands. The Wind Ensemble has been praised for its "exhilarating color," "truly
profound music-making," and "remarkable virtuosity...Concert
bands are the Rodney Dangerfields of the music world: they get no
respect. But a new CD from Reference Recordings, "Bells for Stokowski," with
Jerry Junkin leading the University of Texas Wind Ensemble, is a
delight." - JAMES R. OESTREICH, N.Y. Times
NEW CLASSICS TODAY 10/10 REVIEW:
" The disc title (Bells for Stokowski) promises sonority, sonority, sonority.
The 24-bit HDCD stereo recording begins with timpani, then more drums, then other
percussion, then brass, all roaring and pounding out the start of a brilliant
arrangement by Patrick Dunnigan of selections from Susato's The Danserye. The
sound is just as real as it can be, utterly without strain or congestion, the
contrabassoons buzzing, the horns barking, the trombones and trumpets crackling.
I'm a fan for SACD surround, but this sounds cleaner, more natural, and even
more spatially defined than at least 85 percent of the discs I've heard in the
Jerry Junkin and the University of Texas Wind Ensemble are first rate throughout.
If you are any kind of fan of concert band music, you must
get this disc." [1/11/2006] --Joseph

BELLS FOR STOKOWSKI
Nine delightful Renaissance dances by Tielman Susato start this program
with a bang. The ever-popular English Folksong Suite by Ralph Vaughan
Williams in its original scoring continues the crowd-pleasing mood.
Two important new works follow. David Del Tredicis first composition
for wind band, In Wartime, is based on the popular hymn Abide
With Me and the Persian national anthem. Michael Daugherty is
one of the most performed and commissioned American composers of his
generation. Bells for Stokowski is a fantasy in which the composer
imagines Leopold Stokowski in Philadelphia, hearing all the bells of
the city resonate. Its a sonic spectacular, captured to perfection
by Prof. Johnson in his most dazzling HDCD sound.

Jerry Junkin / Dallas Wind Symphony
RR-126 - $16.98
performed by the Dallas Wind Symphony
Showcases the wind band music of Percy Grainger, including favorites Lincolnshire Posy and Irish Tune from County Derry ("Danny Boy"). Australia considers Grainger its greatest composer; the U.S., where he lived most of his life, praises him as a music educator, composer and arranger of band music; and England considers him supremely important in the preservation and arrangement of British folk songs.
Grainger's gems are performed to perfection by America's only full-time professional wind band, conducted by Jerry Junkin. Grainger specified many unusual, optional, instruments, and this recording has them all. Hear these "original instrument" performances in the spectacular sonics captured by Reference Recordings' world-renowned team of engineer Keith Johnson and producer Tam Henderson.

Dallas Wind Symphony
Mary Preston, organ
Festive Music for Organ, Winds, Brass & Percussion!
One of RR’s all-time bestsellers, and an audiophile touchstone, is Pomp & Pipes!, our first foray into the magnificent repertoire for organ and wind band. In the fourteen years since, we’ve had many requests for “more!”, and here it is, a program that’s at least as exhilarating.
This time, in addition to the renowned Dallas Wind Symphony and its music director Jerry Junkin, we have the services of Mary Preston, resident organist of the mighty Fisk concert instrument in the Meyerson Symphony Center. No one knows better than she the capabilities of the Fisk, and Mary Preston can make it sing and shout.
In addition to the royal coronation anthem CROWN IMPERIAL by William Walton, there are substantial pieces that are seldom heard in such full instrumentation. Richard Strauss contributes a stately FESTIVAL INTRADA; there’s a CANZON originally composed “in stereo” by Giovanni Gabrieli; a ceremonial brass FANFARE by Henri Tomasi; an unusual arrangement by Percy Grainger of the famous COUNTY DERRY AIR; ELSA’S PROCESSION TO THE CATHEDRAL from Lohengrin by Richard Wagner, who knew how to bring an audience to its feet; KAMMERMUSIK #7, a full concerto for organ and winds by Paul Hindemith; and NIAGARA FALLS, a rousing, wild ride by popular American composer Michael Daugherty.
NEW REVIEWS -"Addictively warm and velvety is how this Keith Johnson recording sounds. It captures the sound of the hall in all its rich, creamy, clarified glory as well as that of the mighty, Herman W. Lay Family 1.36 million dollar, 4535 pipe C.B. Fisk Opus 100 organ. It’s a whopper and if your system goes low, you’ll hear and feel it!" -- Michael Fremer, The Tracking Angle - complete review
"From the shriek of piccolo to the thunder of the organ's awesome 32-foot pedal stops, this will give the best stereo system a workout... Hold on to your subwoofer and when organist Mary Preston cuts loose, don't be surprised if neighbors complain about their furniture sliding across the floor." --Scott Cantrell, Dallas Morning News - complete review
