Since we’ve recently re-released a remastered version of Jim Brock’s album “Letters from the Equator,” we thought we would share some of the original customer feedback! “Brock Rocks”By Gerard Dionne “high eq” Jim Brock embodies the the first generation of American drummers who were as influenced by Third World Music (well before it was known as such) as by the music Boomers heard on the radio in the 50s and 60s. He’s a true master…
Last weekend, Joel Fan performed in Oakland, California, and a few of the Reference Recordings staff were able to make it to the concert. We were (as always) wowed by his extremely fine playing. Joel played an extremely difficult program and pulled it off tremendously! We especially enjoyed hearing him play the ferociously difficult Scriabin #5 and Schoenberg Opus 11 — both of which we had not heard him play before. Also during Joel’s visit…
On American Public Media’s program “Composers Datebook”, Ron Nelson’s “Passacaglia (Homage on B-A-C-H)” was featured in celebration of Sunday being Bach’s birthday! The recording used during the program was Holidays and Epiphanies featuring the Dallas Wind Symphony. Click Play to listen to Composers Datebook Featuring Ron Nelson’s Passacaglia (Homage on B-A-C-H) Here is the written transcript from the show: One of the most serious — and daunting — of musical forms is the passacaglia, in…
We attempted to share this video earlier this week, but for whatever reason, the embedded video didn’t show. So, though many may have already seen it, we wanted to make sure everyone got a chance to enjoy Clark Terry in this video. And remember that Clark Terry is featured on our newest release Jazz Kaleidoscope!
Though Percy Grainger is thought of as supremely important in the preservation of British Folk Tunes, we just couldn’t resist using this album for St. Patrick’s Day due to our inclusion of Irish Tune from County Derry (Danny Boy). So, celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, and make sure that Lincolnshire Posy is a part of your musical celebration. And if you don’t have it, now is the time to visit us at http://referencerecordings.com and get your…

Hey Audiophile Fans, here’s something from the Audiophile Blogger at CNET that we thought we would share with you: There have always been good- and bad-sounding recordings, and advances in technology haven’t really tilted the balance all that much, but they’ve changed the playing field. Musicians and bands no longer have to go into a high-priced studio to make a decent recording. If you fancy yourself as any kind of recording engineer here’s your chance…
