The Pittsburgh Symphony has entered a “golden era”

Shostakovich: Symphony No. 5 - Barber: Adagio for Strings

Audiophile Voice magazine reviews Manfred Honeck and the Pittsburgh Symphony‘s GRAMMY®-winning Shostakovich: Symphony No. 5; Barber: Adagio for Strings recording in their latest issue:

“The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra appears to have entered another golden era under the leadership of Manfred Honeck and its association with Reference Recordings. … The sound is open and expansive with a realistic sense of place and space. You can hear details that might easily be submerged for concerts goers but they never seem artificially highlighted on the recording. Despite the relatively close placement of the micro- phones to the musicians, reverberation gives the impression that the listener is back, at least a dozen rows from the stage. In sum, the engineering has produced a recording that is about as close to the live con- cert experience as I can get at home … with a bit more detail thrown in for good measure. … There can be no definitive recording of these two works. They both offer, especially the Shostakovich, boundless creative opportunities. However, this recording has to contain the best of both pieces in terms of sound, interpretation and the bravura musicianship of the PSO players. Enthusiastically recommended.”
